Taupo – Relaxed Volcanic Welcomes in New Zealand

Volcanoes circle New Zealand, hundreds of them crumble and explode as they cross the landscape; some stand with elegant cones that seem ready to erupt once more. Others are in decay, slowly fading into the lakes that fill the land. Tongariro provides an indelible impression of New Zealand's volcanic subtleties, the mountains evoking the wild appeal of the country. Fly to Taupo via Auckland, where the view from your hotel balcony is dappled with peaks, many of them reflected in the serenity of Lake Taupo. Today is left free to give you time to relax and recuperate after the flight. There is plenty to do if you are feeling adventurous; kayaks take you onto the lake while easy walking trails offer the views of volcanic legend.

Detailed Description

The list of Oceana's World Heritage sites is overwhelmingly the natural realm. A continent of surreal space and color, national parks stretch the boundaries of fiction. Alpine mountains framed by ancient volcanoes, glaciers tumble into the forest, great stretches of desert unveil a kaleidoscope of reds as the hues flicker when the sun crosses the sky. Vibrancy awaits in the ocean, everything from serene whale sharks to thousands of interconnected coral reefs. Sand islands, eucalyptus forests, snowy mountains and starry skies, Oceana offers an ode to nature's drama, every angle a unique showcase of an untamed continent.

This handcrafted luxury itinerary will inspire as you journey through the natural World Heritage sites in New Zealand and Australia to reveal a phantasmal blend of landscape and wilderness area. Start in Tongariro, the world's fourth oldest national park, and an expansive space of Maori history, volcanic relics, and pristine lakes. Southwestern New Zealand is one giant World Heritage site, and you'll spend several days to take in its intimate details. Spend the night on a boat in Fjordland, step across a glacier to strange ice sculptures, explore the night's sky, and take a train journey through a remarkable alpine world.

You will then reach Sydney, and the soothing natural realm is briefly interrupted by the drama of a performance at the Sydney Opera House. The next morning brings the Blue Mountains, a eucalyptus-clad forest with crumbling sandstone pinnacles. Fly up to the coast to Fraser Island for a huge expanse of sand and strange flora. Travel in a four-wheel drive vehicle into the wilderness, before the next day reveals the grandeur of the Great Barrier Reef. Then cross the desert and stop to admire the rocks of Uluru and Kata Tjuta to immerse yourself in all the enchantment of Australia's red center. Complete the itinerary with Ningaloo Reef, a remarkable marine world that allows you to swim with whale sharks and get close to the world's unusual underwater characters.

Australia Travel Review: 2 Weeks

After months of working with Zicasso’s travel specialist designing the perfect itinerary, I was grounded by my cardiologist and unable to take the trip. With regards to the travel specialist, she was such a pleasure to work with, an excellent communicator, humorous, punctual, keen on detail, and focused on customer satisfaction.

Australia, New Zealand Trip Review: Sydney, Cruise, Private Zoo Experience, Ayers Rock, Great Barrier Reef, 3 Weeks

All four of us who traveled to Australia and New Zealand this fall agree that Zicasso’s travel specialist did a fantastic job assisting us with planning and the actual trip itself. She listened to our itinerary, wants and desires, as well as the time constraints and budget. And while we did spend quite a bit more than what we originally intended, we had the trip of a lifetime. We are all completely satisfied with our journey, as organized by the travel specialist.

New Zealand Vacation Review: Nelson, Mount Cook, Queenstown, 20-Day Trip

From planning to execution, Zicasso’s travel specialist was fantastic. They were very responsive through the app while we were on the trip. They were extremely helpful in helping us recover our passports that we forgot in one of the hotel safes.

New Zealand Trip Review: 9 Weeks

Our trip was incredible. Zicasso’s tour operator was fantastic in planning and executing this special trip. We were in New Zealand for almost nine weeks.

Twice during our travel, we were able to get instant help to adjust our travel schedule, once because we wanted more time in one place and later to accommodate for being sick for a week.

Our trip involved 20 different hotels, inns, and guest houses, while experiencing boats, trains, and car driving to navigate both islands. The tour operator helped to arrange about 50 different events for us and then we added in many more ourselves before we left.

It has been almost a year since we traveled (Feb-Apr 2025). We have praised the tour operator (and Zicasso) to all our friends for its incredible attention to details and help anticipating all contingencies. The app for the trip was incredible in supporting the travel and collecting all the details of the arrangements comfortably in one place on our cell phones. We drove more than 2,000 miles during our trip and used Google Maps continually to navigate everywhere.

All our accommodations were comfortable. We carefully planned our packing to match the temperatures predicted for each location. We each traveled with a carry-on suitcase and a small backpack, and had everything we needed.

What helped with our planning was that we actually rehearsed the trip for several nights two months before we left and pre-planned special dinner reservations.

Australia, New Zealand Vacation Review: Adelaide, Lizard Island, Kangaroo Island, Milford Sound, 1 Month

This was our second trip organized through Zicasso and both trips were great. In retrospect, we might have changed a few things, but by an overwhelming margin, the trip was great. Interesting tours, knowledgeable guides, nice hotels.
