Salzburg – Luster of the Mountains

Salzburg is considered one of Europe’s most beautiful cities, set amongst the Salzburg Alps in view of Untersberg Mountain, which reaches a height of more than 6,000 feet above sea level. Old Town contains narrow medieval streets and courtyards wrapped in arcades, harkening back to the past of an aristocratic decadence. Your flight arrives at Salzburg Airport, where your private transfer greets you at baggage claim. Your hotel stands on the promenade of the Salzach River with a view of the impressive Hohensalzburg Fortress.

The hotel’s opulence emanates from the regal décor and the history of servicing aristocrats, artists, and nobility since the 19th century. The water of the Salzach reflects the bridges and banks on the glassy surface. The river trickles past the hotel as your guide leads you on an introductory tour of the city, filled with spires and domes rising in imitation of the surrounding mountain peaks. Classical music drifts out of homes strewn alongside the cobblestone lanes. Residenzplatz, a large and historic square, stands in the heart of Old Town on the city’s left bank.

A marble Baroque fountain crafted in the 17th century crowns the center of the public square, reaching a height of nearly 50 feet. Dramatic horses rise out of the central pool beneath a figure of Atlas holding dishes. King Triton adorns the display with a conch shell in hand. Horse-drawn carriages glide down the avenues with the horse’s clopping hooves echoing against the stone homes and shops. The scent of marzipan emanates from the series of confectionaries. It feels as though you have stepped into a preserved picturesque fairytale.

We had a fabulous trip to Italy, including to Sorrento, Taormina, and Rome. Zicasso’s travel specialist made sure every detail was taken care of, including stays in beautiful, well-located hotels and excursions that were interesting and fun for our family.

For example, she arranged for an airport host to assist us with our arrival to and departure from the Rome airport, and she was simply amazing, whisking us through the airport and eliminating stress for our family.

Austria, Czechia Trip Review: Vienna, Prague, Christmas Markets, Food Tour, 10-Day Trip

Having used Zicasso previously, I solicited their help in planning a 10-day trip to Vienna and Prague over Christmas and New Year’s, with short notice. Parameters included a full experience, Christmas markets, and an exposure to culture, churches, and museums. Zicasso’s travel agent, based in Slovenia, was helpful, responsive, and timely in her communications, including when issues and concerns arose. The overall experience was excellent, including the pre-arranged tours. The price point was high, especially when considering the marginal cost for a third person, but we were fully satisfied with our experience.

Austria, Czechia Tour Review: Vienna, Filzmoos, Kitzsteinhorn, Salzburg, Prague, Christmas Markets, 12 Nights

The trip was exactly what we wished for this past Christmas. We had all our grown children together for Christmas for the first time in years.

We started the trip in Vienna, where we took a walking tour of the city and saw its wonderful Christmas markets, Schönbrunn Palace, the Lipizzaner stallions, and learned how to best make apple strudel. From there, we went to Filzmoos, where we took a sleigh ride up the mountain for a traditional Austrian dinner. We also spent Christmas Day up on Kitzsteinhorn. Then we went on to Salzburg, where we took a city tour and enjoyed the late Christmas market opportunities. From there, we drove to Prague to spend our New Year’s.

Zicasso’s travel company gave us just what we wanted. And the most important component of the trip was the people we met along the way. The drivers and the tour guides were all fabulous. Many seemed like old friends by the time our trip was over. Please send our thanks to all those involved in making our trip one we will never forget.
