Irazu – Discovering an Active Volcano and Lounging at the Lodge
San Jose is a charming capital, but with seven days in Costa Rica, you will not really want to waste any time on city streets, especially when you can venture directly into nature. After landing at the country’s main international airport, you will be met by your local guide and transferred to the Caribbean. Upon your arrival, you will check-in to a lodge that basks beneath the frame of Irazu volcano. Here, you have time to rest before lunch. Your lodge will be emblematic of Costa Rica’s appeal, providing luxury and space in incredible natural surroundings. After lunch, you will ascend with your family up an active volcano that last erupted in 1994.
It is very safe to explore at the moment, but you can still encounter surreal volcanic power. The road will twist and turn, leading you toward a summit that features three craters. Pools will shimmer and will be visible when you peer into one of the craters, fumaroles will spit out sulfuric gases, and bubbling mud pools will change before your eyes. You will be exploring a wonderful volcanic world, and there are different hiking trails in which you can indulge, so your time on Irazu can be as active as your family desires. There will even be a waterfall in the vicinity should you wish to extend the day’s adventure. Irazu is en route to the Caribbean coast, so this will be a convenient stop in addition to providing you with time to relax after your volcano tour.

Detailed Description
Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast is sublime and surreal. Thick jungle leans out above pristine beaches, monkeys howl from the trees, and sea turtle hatchlings make a run for their life. In Costa Rica, you can rest and relax in destinations that feel cut off from the rest of the world. You can also venture on an adventure deep into the jungle or out onto enchanting reefs. Costa Rica’s Pacific coast has become increasingly popular, but the Caribbean has preserved its rich and untouched feel. With only one week in Costa Rica, it will be difficult to combine both coastlines, but seven days in the Caribbean can blend coastal pleasures with more of the country’s iconic experiences, such as active volcanos and wildlife refuges.
Most importantly, Costa Rica’s Caribbean offers an enormous sense of freedom and space. Here, your children can find a place to run around and play in nature. There is solitude, all the serenity that you can expect from this tropical sea, and all the natural adventure that makes Costa Rica so alluring. It will prove to be amazing how many different experiences you can combine into only seven days, and this handcrafted tour will lead you from an active volcano to a jungle river and then to a wildlife-rich national park and finally the beach bliss of Puerto Viejo. This adventure will provide you with seven days of getting close as a family and also seven days of exploring one of the world’s friendliest and most biodiverse nations.
After flying to San Jose, you will be met by a local guide for a short transfer to Irazu, which is an active volcano with three craters and surreal thermal power. A tour around the summit will surely have you excited about Costa Rica’s nature before you are provided with some downtime at your boutique lodge. Continuing toward the Caribbean, you will spend a day rafting down the Rio Pacuare, which is an easy adventure that is possible for almost all ages and is mostly about drifting through nature. Most of your week in Costa Rica will be spent in two contrasting Caribbean destinations: Tortuguero National Park and Puerto Viejo.
Tortuguero is part jungle and part coast; it is a mystical world where monkeys howl and sea turtles provide hours of pure joy. River cruises will bring you intimately close to many different animals, and nocturnal beach walks can reveal sea turtles as they hatch from their eggs. From the lodge, you can listen to the wild while you are only a short ride from the waves. In Puerto Viejo, there are classic experiences, such as the golden beaches and swaying palm trees. Here, there is adventure as well. On day six, you will indulge in snorkeling and swimming expeditions before a guided hike leads you through the wonders of Cahuita National Park. You will even have time to stop at a wildlife refuge before flying back to San Jose and departing the country.

Unforgettable Adventure Vacation Experience
This trip exceeded every expectation. From start to finish, it was the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation. The ziplining through the lush canopy was absolutely breathtaking—soaring above the trees with panoramic views of the cloud forest was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
White-water rafting was equally thrilling, with just the right balance of excitement and safety. The guides were incredibly professional and knowledgeable, and made the entire experience fun and secure.
The cloud forest tour was magical—walking through mist-covered trails surrounded by exotic wildlife and vibrant greenery felt like stepping into another world. ATV riding added an adventurous edge, allowing us to explore rugged terrains and hidden scenic spots we wouldn’t have seen otherwise.
Hiking around the volcano was another highlight—both awe-inspiring and humbling. The views were spectacular and the guides shared fascinating insights about the region’s geology and history.
To top it all off, the accommodations were exceptional—beautiful hotels with stunning views, comfortable rooms, and outstanding service. Every detail was thoughtfully curated, making it easy to relax after a day full of adventure.
We highly recommend this experience to anyone looking for the perfect mix of adrenaline, nature, and luxury.

Zicasso’s travel company did an excellent job in organizing our family trip by ensuring our top five "must-do" activities were available, despite limitations due to our last-minute planning and very busy tourist season. They really did some outside-the-box thinking for us and delivered a wonderful experience.

We had a wonderful time on our trip. Zicasso’s travel specialist was responsive to what we wanted to do and adjusted our trip to fit our budget. He included our interests and took the research out of it for us. We asked him to plan on a tight time crunch of less than a month and he made it with ease.
Costa Rica had so much to do and he kept us active, which we wanted. I appreciated how the travel company had a travel app for all of our itineraries and tickets, as well as an emergency contact to make adjustments during the trip. We used this several times to book things we discovered during the trip and it was a breeze.
Our favorite adventures from our trip were ziplining, the river tour, and the waterfall in La Fortuna. We also enjoyed animal tours, which says a lot, as I'm not an animal fan, but the adventure was wonderful and felt very safe. I would consider the Monte Verde night tour next time.
We enjoyed our resort in Manuel Antonio and the beach at Manuel Antonio. The view was incredible.
Our whole tour flowed seamlessly and Costa Rica was beautiful and full of adventures. We'd happily return and use the travel company.
The coffee and chocolate tour in Don Juan was wonderful. Additionally, all of our hotels were great. I'd highly recommend this experience.

Zicasso’s travel company, and specifically our travel specialist and his team, were very responsive, helpful, and made themselves available from start to finish. Although I didn’t need to contact them during the trip, they reached out via WhatsApp.
Regarding the trip, it was the perfect mix of rainforest and beach. The transportation for every leg of the trip was like having our private chauffeur. The location of the accommodations was perfect in relation to amenities.
The only unfortunate thing was we changed rooms in Tamarindo. Although the room originally booked was larger, with a jacuzzi and more expensive, we chose to move to a smaller room with an ocean and sunset view vs. staying in the larger room with a jacuzzi tub looking at the roof of the building. The hotel made us sign something acknowledging we were choosing a less expensive room and would not receive a refund for the difference. That was the only unfortunate occurrence during the trip.

Zicasso’s travel specialist designed the perfect trip. We had three generations of travelers and she was able to take all our needs into account. All the hotels recommended were excellent and the tours were great. The travel specialist took time with us via Zoom for planning and was available for messaging before and during our trip. She and the team were terrific.
