Bajos del Toro – Arrive in San Jose and Travel to Bajos del Toro

San Jose retains the same active spirit and bustling nature you remember from your last Costa Rica vacation. The Central Market continues to bustle with the stunning colors of mango, pineapple, passion fruit, and papaya. The aroma of cherimoya soup drifts through the aisles, emanating from the sodas, small restaurants serving traditional dishes. The handmade crafts filling the lanes of the Outdoor Market at Museo Nacional still hold the charming allure connected to the customs of the Central Valley and greater Costa Rica.

Your flight lands at Juan Santamaria International Airport, where your private transfer greets you upon arrival. As you make your way out of the city, your driver points to the mountain ridges encircling the Central Valley. A slight blue haze dwindles over the verdant crops. Your driver calls the ridge the “Coffee Line,” the demarcation at around 5,575 feet above sea level where the coffee in the Central Valley ceases to grow. You are excited for this new experience visiting the area of Bajos del Toro, which offers the biodiversity of the cloud forest, along with luxurious amenities and wildlife, away from the crowds of Monteverde.

The roads take you around the bubbling activity of the Poas Volcano.  You travel over the steep mountain ridges where the air is noticeably crisper than that of the Central Valley. The cooler temperature overtakes the landscape as you reach the remote comforts of your eco-resort where you will take the time to relax surrounded by the serene sounds of nature. Your private suite offers a remarkable view over the canopy, while your Jacuzzi on the patio provides a soothing, private experience in which to indulge in the beginnings of your Costa Rica vacation.

Detailed Description

This 8-day Costa Rica vacation is dedicated to introducing returning visitors to the endless splendors of its rich biodiversity while enjoying the renowned comforts of celebrated eco-lodges set in cloud forests, rainforests, and overlooking the Pacific Coast. Your return adventure to Costa Rica begins with your arrival at Juan Santamaria International Airport where the first of your private transfers greets you at customs and escorts you to a secluded, gorgeous lodge in Bajos del Toro. The quiet charm of the landscape welcomes you back to Costa Rica and offers a new, distinctive setting in which you can explore.

While in Bajos del Toro, you connect to the culture with a small tour of the nearby town where you will meet with a local restaurant owner to learn how to make regional tortillas. The trails connected to your resort lead to a selection of three waterfalls cascading beneath the cloud forest. The trees also offer an opportunity to see the resplendent quetzal. Venture to La Paz Waterfall Gardens, where rehabilitated wildlife inhabits the protected landscape in aviaries and large enclosures and where trails lead to a series of five fabulous falls. Upon reaching your resort in Sarapiqui Rainforest, you can relax in the stunning view of the surrounding mixture of dense trees, open plantations, and rolling volcanic summits.

While in Sarapiqui, choose your excursion based upon your desired way to experience and explore the landscape. Take a horseback ride to a historic ranch or walk along a biological reserve. You can also glide through the trees on a zip line, feeling like Tarzan swinging on the jungle vines. A short flight takes you from San Jose’s airport to the small landing strip in Nosara. Your private transfer escorts you to the captivating Lagarta Lodge, which stands on a hillside overlooking the blend of Pacific Coast and mangrove forest. Experience Nosara and Lagarta Lodge at your leisure, learning to surf, meeting a premier birder to discover the avifauna of the diverse region, or taking to the coastline to see turtles at night. The majesty of Guanacaste offers distinctive pleasures unique to your return vacation in Costa Rica.  Consider browsing reviews of our partner travel agents for Costa Rica as you refine your own trip plans.

Costa Rica Tour Review: Drake Bay, Puerto Jimenez, Wildlife, Beach, 10 Days

We booked late and were impressed with what Zicasso’s travel company was able to put together on short notice.

We stayed at two totally different hotels, both wonderful. Our hotel near Drake Bay was in an amazing location, with breathtaking views. The staff was fantastic and the home-cooked meals were wonderful. The room was comfortable, but small, all you needed, nothing more. More spacious rooms were available; we just booked too late and wanted to stick to a budget. Getting to Drake Bay certainly required some effort, but it was well worth it. One day, we did not go on an excursion and had the entire beach to ourselves, how amazing.

From Drake Bay, we traveled to Puerto Jiménez, which was also a journey, but again, well worth it. The travel company booked us at our hotel in Puerto Jiménez, a hidden gem. We had great excursions, saw lots of wildlife, and met some wonderful people. Here too, the staff was great. We had an amazing time, when can we go back?

Thank you to the travel company for putting a great trip together.

Costa Rica Tour Review: Monteverde, Arenal, La Fortuna, Tamarindo, Rainforest Tour, River Cruise, 10 Days

Zicasso’s travel consultant was fantastic. They were responsive and delivered well on the request for a quick introduction to Costa Rica in three stops. Hotel accommodations were very nice all around, though our hotel in Monteverde cloudforest was a standout. Transfers and reservations went off without a hitch, and the pre-scheduled activities were most enjoyable for all.

Zicasso’s travel specialist did an excellent job of meeting our objectives! She was knowledgeable and her suggestions exceeded our expectations. Being seniors did not curtail our fun and relaxation. We asked to experience the different cultures and the different locations throughout Costa Rica. She met both goals and I would highly recommend Zicasso tours, especially those planned by this travel specialist; she was excellent.
