Detailed Description
The scars of war are embedded on the landscapes of Southern England and Northern France. They're not places that dwell on the past. Sites and memorials expertly evoke and remember, while also looking forward and providing a tribute to the world as we know it. This handcrafted ten-day itinerary connects the most important battlefields and world war sites in Western Europe, piecing together the narrative of WWI and WWII. While certain places on this itinerary are not always easy viewing, they're also an ode to a celebration. Without these sites, and the sacrifice of those who came before us, the world wouldn't be as it is today. And it's this tribute that stands proudly at the heart of the itinerary.
Traveling from London to Paris, you're accompanied by a specialist historian guide. Hidden stories are unraveled, tales from the bunkers are remembered, and the atmosphere of the times is effortlessly evoked. Some of the destinations are memorial sites, and there's an opportunity to take part in the incredibly moving Last Post ceremony in Ypres. Others remain perfectly preserved since the 1940s. Sherman tanks point at crumbling bunkers; Spitfire jets stand proudly beside Lancaster Bombers, labyrinthine bunkers take you to command rooms, and code-cracking machines provide a baffling sight.
During the first three days in London, there's a chance to take in the iconic city landmarks, as well as Europe's finest collection of war exhibits. In particular, the Imperial War Museum and aircraft of RAF Hendon provide an immersive journey into another time. Discover the character behind the legend of Winston Churchill with a visit to Churchill's private home, followed by the surreal 900-year old war tunnels that were used to orchestrate the Dunkirk landings. Throughout the itinerary, you stay in five-star hotels or boutique guesthouses doused in centuries of tradition. Each has a premier location, enabling you to find many restaurants and attractions within easy walking distance.
Then, you cross to France and the moving tributes of World War I and trench warfare. A few days are dedicated to the U. S. involvement in the war in Europe; memorial and cemeteries are visited, but also beaches dotted with tanks and weaponry, tunnels and bunkers, and various evocative memoirs to the D-Day landings. Next, you move to Paris and a five-star hotel in the exquisite French capital. A day is dedicated to the war history of the occupied city, including Nazi headquarters and the spooky tunnels used during the Holocaust. Like always, there's a positive slant, a touching reminder of how integral these sites have been to today's world. Finish with a free day in Paris, a chance to discover the iconic attractions that can be found throughout the city.

Wonderful! We did and saw a lot, and everything went smoothly. Zicasso's travel designer was very responsive to our questions and listened to what our expectations were for our trip. She really was a pleasure to work with. When she was out of the office, her colleagues were equally responsive and easy to work with.

My wife and I just returned from a two-week trip in France that was mostly organized by the travel company. Zicasso's travel designer organized all of the transportation, accommodations, and activities for a combined week-long stay in Normandy and in Paris. In addition, she coordinated transportation and tours for us and a group of friends who joined us for a cooking school in the Loire Valley after our first week in France. The travel company did not plan the cooking school event.
The planning process started with a telephone conversation with our travel designer. I described our travel style, what we wanted to see and do, and a rough budget, and she came back with a preliminary itinerary. We had a second conversation and adjusted that itinerary to match with our travel and budget needs. I thought she was very helpful and responsive to this part of the process.
Overall, we were very pleased with the service and the product we got from the travel company. Everything was very well coordinated and well organized.
The only glitch we had was upon arrival in France. Our driver was not there to meet us at the airport. I texted her and she quickly contacted the driver and solved the issue (he couldn't find parking). In addition, we happened to be there when there was a potential work stoppage by air-traffic controllers and other government employees. Our travel designer proactively reached out to me to inform us of the situation. I really appreciated that.
Our accommodations were all excellent and very well located. The small group tours and private guides we had were also very well qualified and professional. In addition, the travel company had an app which contained the itinerary, travel documents, and other useful information. That was pretty slick!
I've mentioned our travel designer in this review, but she also works with a team of other people. Everyone we worked with was great and we wouldn't hesitate to use the travel company again should the need arise.
