Ancient Cultures of Morocco Tour

With a full day in Marrakech, you can explore the city’s history and tradition. Starting your private tour on the city’s outskirts, you will explore palaces and tombs, which are classic examples of Berber and Arab influences. After lunch, you will travel into the medina, where you will be immersed in the souks, which are sensual places of strange sounds and wonderful aromas. After enjoying lunch in a Berber village, you will continue to the Sahara. Ait Benhaddou is the oldest and best-preserved of all the mud-brick kasbahs and now enjoys UNESCO World Heritage status. You will eventually make your way to Ouarzazate, which is your overnight destination. Ouarzazate is a gateway to the Sahara and a great place for basking in the Berber culture.

This morning, you will travel the Road of the Thousand Kasbahs. The desert scenery is dominated by fairytale-like castles that rise red from the dust. Throughout the afternoon, you will visit small caravanserai and hopefully share mint tea with people about to cross the desert. These encounters are almost as fascinating as an evening with the Gnawa, which is a group of people who came across the Sahara from Sudan. This evening, you will be in the Sahara, immersed in a community of people that keeps ancient cultural traditions alive.

With the sun barely peeking over the horizon, you will travel by camel to the sand dunes, crossing the virgin sand to places of great solitude and silence. By mid-morning, you will be out of the dunes and on a flight to Fes, which is the world’s largest walled city. Fes is enormous, and culture spills from every corner of its city center. Tanners continue their ancient ways, locals meet for glasses of mint tea at small medina cafes, and mosques and madrassas create a sense of peace on the city streets. You do not need to plan anything specific here because a local guide will show around so that you can experience some of the very best aspects of Arab culture.

While Fes is the grandest of the imperial cities, Meknes is mostly forgotten. Meknes is Morocco’s artisanal city, and local artisans do not pay any tax. So, everything you will see is a work of art. In Meknes, you will have the opportunity to meet with artisans and understand how art is so integral to culture. If you think of beautiful Moroccan design, there is a good chance it has its origins in this imperial city. It is this artistic element of culture you will explore today. Returning to Fes with your guide, you can stop at Volubilis, which is a fabulous set of Roman. Back in Fes, it will be all about the atmosphere as you sip on mint tea.

This morning will be left free so that you can get out among the souks to find souvenirs with your guide. Late check out will be arranged so that you can refresh after lunch before a private airport transfer.
