Detailed Description

New Zealand’s North Island has a little of everything that you need for a family vacation. Famous attractions like Hobbiton can keep your kids excited while the beaches and islands can provide downtime and space to come together away from the crowds. Easy hiking and kayaking will keep your vacation fresh and exciting, and you will also be immersed with the Maori culture before sailing on a private catamaran. The North Island also has far better weather than the South Island, especially with the Bay of Islands and Coromandel Peninsula. This means that you can enjoy Pacific beaches, relax during quiet hours on the coast, and enjoy the North Island’s unique volcanic experiences.

This handcrafted, private adventure connects North Island highlights in a relaxed and efficient manner. You will travel by helicopter between some of the destinations, which will be journeys that save valuable vacation time and offer stunning views over a volcanic landscape. All of your activities will be privately guided and can be adjusted to your family’s interests and energy. For example, on the Coromandel Peninsula, there are various hiking trails, and you can walk to a hidden beach for a picnic. From here, you can kayak to a deserted island or stay on the beach and make sandcastles. Handpicked hotels will add to the luxury, and the premium of this vacation is on escaping the crowds to enjoy intimate family time.

After flying to Auckland, you will clear customs and immigration before taking a helicopter to Helena Bay in the Bay of Islands. Secluded and serene, this Northern area of the North Island is ideal for a first few days in New Zealand. You can ease into your vacation and escape from your everyday along the stunning coastline. Local Maori members will be your guides on day three, and they will introduce you to their culture and landscapes. Waiheke Island has an indulgent atmosphere, and you will spend two days here, checking out bays, beaches, vineyards, and walking trails. Like the Bay of Islands, Waiheke has a tropical Pacific vibe with a warm climate and New Zealand’s laid-back lifestyle.

You will stay on the coast and spend days six and seven on the Coromandel Peninsula, which is a destination of dramatic, natural landscapes and adventures that are far from the road. Here, you can hike and kayak or savor the North Island’s wonderful impression of space. While turquoise waters and surreal rock formations provide two attractions, you can also travel inland to visit bistros, working farms, and the chance for your kids to make their own ice cream. Both Hobbiton and Rotorua can be visited on the drive to Lake Taupo, which will be your final destination. From hobbit holes to exploding geysers and bubbling orange mud pools, these attractions are often the favorite highlights for children who are visiting the North Island.

You will be staying on the quieter side of Lake Taupo at a waterside lodge that is located away from the town. Your three days here are customizable, and there is so much that you can do in the local area. Already scheduled will be a day of private sailing on Lake Rotoiti, visiting a kiwi sanctuary, admiring hot pools and other geothermal activity, and a fishing cruise on Lake Taupo. It is a lovely area for escaping the modern world and enjoying family vacations. Here, space and time to be together as one, and it can be made all the more memorable by new landscapes and experiences.

New Zealand Vacation Review: Lake Tekapo, Mount Cook, 2 Weeks

The trip was so well put together and documented in the app that everything flowed seamlessly. Zicasso’s travel specialist did a great job in planning the trip. The pace of our activities and transports was very thoughtful, and we were able to fit a lot in without feeling overwhelmed.

New Zealand Vacation Review: Christchurch, Queenstown, Doubtful Sound, Te Anau, Lake Tekapo, Kaikoura, Cruise, Bike Tour, Glowworm Caves, 3-Week Trip

We had a great trip! All the logistics and connections were spot-on. If I had it to plan again, I would incorporate fewer long drives and possibly take one or two short flights. We had three days of actual driving five-plus hours, which turned into six to seven hours with stops.

Highlights included the Christchurch tour, the Around the Basin bike tour in Queenstown, the Doubtful Sound overnight cruise, biking around Lake Tekapō, as well as Kaikōura, and the glowworm caves in Te Anau. The TranzAlpine train was enjoyable. However, the mountain scenery encountered was not as dramatic as that seen in the more southern areas.

Unfortunately, our helicopter ride to the glaciers in Franz Josef was rained out. Our days in Queenstown were muted with fog, so both the gondola dinner experience, as well as the dinner cruise on Lake Wakatipu, were somewhat compromised. Both activities involved large buffets, with mediocre food and lots of tourists.

We enjoyed the Fiordland jet-boat ride and the biking back option. I felt the portion on the water was a bit light on the 360 turns and heavy on the nature focus. The Dark Sky experience was a disappointment, as wind conditions only allowed our group to go to the crater, not the observatory. Add to that a very bright, near-full moon and the conditions were not ideal for viewing.

After that late-night experience, the next day we drove to Lake Tekapō (with stops, six to seven hours). Between the time in the car and a developing hip issue that could compromise the required hiking, we decided not to drive one-and-a-half hours the next morning to Mount Cook for the Tasman Glacier tour.

Kaikōura is an attractive, quiet coastal town that was a nice final stop on our itinerary. We rented bikes and traversed the Peninsula Trail, including the seal colony.

All of our accommodations were in line with the parameters that we gave Zicasso’s travel specialist regarding location, ratings, and features. We especially enjoyed our hotel in Christchurch, our hotel in Te Anau, and our inn in Kaikōura. The motel in Lake Tekapō was the most dated property; however, the location was fabulous.

Again, we had a wonderful trip and I have already recommended this travel company to our friends, who are booked later this year.

New Zealand Vacation Review: Christchurch, Mount Cook, Milford Sound, Franz Josef, Glacier Flight, 11 Nights

In short, Zicasso’s travel company did a great job with our trip, start to finish. I gave the travel agent some parameters, e.g., some adventure, some chill, stay in nice places, don’t move too many times, etc. Having not been to New Zealand, and specifically the South Island, I had no idea what to plan, travel distances, or places to stay, and the travel company put together a great trip. Anyone planning a self-drive to the South Island would be wise to use this travel company and our travel agent for planning. I couldn’t be happier!
