Auckland – Relaxing Around the Harbor
Yachts lull gently in Auckland’s harbor, thousands of them with their masts standing proud. A promenade may wind along the water and past dozens of quirky cafes and restaurant terraces. You can sense the city bustle is somewhere close, but by the harbor, it is always incredibly tranquil and relaxed. After landing in Auckland, you will be transferred to a hotel that overlooks the water and harbor. With such a long journey and the time difference, it is hard to predict how you will feel upon your arrival. Your first day will be deliberately left free, and the waterfront is the best place to be when you need some downtime. Should you wish to explore more of Auckland, a local guide can arrange a route and sightseeing.

Detailed Description
The New Zealand experience is dramatically shaped by Mother Nature. Even in just ten days, the diversity that you witness can be breathtaking. You can cruise through glowworm caves before watching geysers explore, and there will be lakes and hot springs beneath the shadow of dazzling, snow-capped mountains. Mystique and wonder drift through the air in Milford Sound while a helicopter can take you to the natural ice sculptures of Franz Josef Glacier. These are simply the destinations that you get to explore on this amazing excursion through New Zealand. A considerable part of the New Zealand experience is created by the journeys that you can take from the TranzAlpine train to a road that connects three national parks in a UNESCO World Heritage landscape.
Carefully planned travel connections are essential if you are to see the best of both islands in only ten days. On this luxury tour, you will travel by domestic flights and privately chauffeured journeys. Although you will move quickly, with just two days in each overnight destination, the travel should not feel tiresome. Flights mean that you can hop between diverse landscapes while road journeys offer endless vistas and places to stop along the way. Then, a scenic train excursion will connect many ecosystems and landscapes in only four hours, which will be a fitting final tribute to the country that you will have to come to love.
With this handcrafted tour, you will spend four nights on the North Island and five days on the South. Auckland is a convenient and relaxed place to start with the harbourfront being a great place to overcome the jet lag on day one. You can take a ferry to Waiheke Island on day two, where vineyards and golden beaches will create a tropical atmosphere. On day three, you will hit the road, traveling across bucolic Waikato to Waitomo, which is where the glowworm caves will offer a surreal experience. You will culminate today in Rotorua, where a Maori family will provide a traditional welcome and invite you for a hangi dinner. Day four will be slow and serene, so you can spend time in the natural hot springs and see more exploding geysers.
Fly to Queenstown on day five, and there will be a choice of local adventures, including a jetboat ride, a Lord of the Rings movie locations tour, or one of the many famous bungee jumps. You will escape to Fjordland the following morning where Milford Sound impresses its majesty and wild wonder. You will journey across snowy mountains, cruise the most dramatic of New Zealand’s fjords, and then admire Fjordland from the air with a helicopter flight back to Queenstown.
From here, the journey to Franz Josef Glacier is one of the finest on the planet, twisting through three national parks in a UNESCO World Heritage landscape. Arriving in Franz Josef will be just as spectacular. The glacier shimmers on high before tumbling through a rainforest to meet crashing ocean waves. You will discover this splendor during a Heli-Hike on day eight with natural ice sculptures and contrasting color being likely to linger long in your imagination.
You will complete your journey through World Heritage Te Wahipounamu on day nine with a private road journey and then the spectacular TranzAlpine train. With a 6 p.m. arrival, you will not have long in Christchurch, but a single evening will be enough to demonstrate how the city is rebuilding after the earthquake. The small city is also a convenient departure point. By flying out of New Zealand, you will reflect on the fact that your vacation felt like it was much longer than ten days. With so much to see and do, the country tends has this effect on people. Don’t take just our word for it - consider reading some of our travelers’ reviews of New Zealand, and see how you can customize your own dream vacation.

The organization was perfect! I especially liked all the excursions and the special chauffeurs who picked us up at the airports.

All four of us who traveled to Australia and New Zealand this fall agree that Zicasso’s travel specialist did a fantastic job assisting us with planning and the actual trip itself. She listened to our itinerary, wants and desires, as well as the time constraints and budget. And while we did spend quite a bit more than what we originally intended, we had the trip of a lifetime. We are all completely satisfied with our journey, as organized by the travel specialist.

From planning to execution, Zicasso’s travel specialist was fantastic. They were very responsive through the app while we were on the trip. They were extremely helpful in helping us recover our passports that we forgot in one of the hotel safes.

Our trip was incredible. Zicasso’s tour operator was fantastic in planning and executing this special trip. We were in New Zealand for almost nine weeks.
Twice during our travel, we were able to get instant help to adjust our travel schedule, once because we wanted more time in one place and later to accommodate for being sick for a week.
Our trip involved 20 different hotels, inns, and guest houses, while experiencing boats, trains, and car driving to navigate both islands. The tour operator helped to arrange about 50 different events for us and then we added in many more ourselves before we left.
It has been almost a year since we traveled (Feb-Apr 2025). We have praised the tour operator (and Zicasso) to all our friends for its incredible attention to details and help anticipating all contingencies. The app for the trip was incredible in supporting the travel and collecting all the details of the arrangements comfortably in one place on our cell phones. We drove more than 2,000 miles during our trip and used Google Maps continually to navigate everywhere.
All our accommodations were comfortable. We carefully planned our packing to match the temperatures predicted for each location. We each traveled with a carry-on suitcase and a small backpack, and had everything we needed.
What helped with our planning was that we actually rehearsed the trip for several nights two months before we left and pre-planned special dinner reservations.

This was our second trip organized through Zicasso and both trips were great. In retrospect, we might have changed a few things, but by an overwhelming margin, the trip was great. Interesting tours, knowledgeable guides, nice hotels.

It was so easy to work with Zicasso’s travel designer and the travel company. After her phone call, she worked up the trip of a lifetime. It was just perfect for us.
As we traveled, if there were any changes, we were alerted in a timely fashion. We were notified of delayed departures and possible cancellations. The only cancellation was quickly rescheduled as per our preferred time. No worries! We just have to check about two cancellations that were weather-related and how we get reimbursed for those expenses. Those cancellations were understandable and not the end of the world. We will be in contact with the travel designer to find out about those and know it will be an easy process, like everything else has been.
We will, and have, recommended this process to friends who want to visit New Zealand.
