Detailed Description

So much of New Zealand is off the beaten track. This country of wilderness and ancient stories has always been a little bashful about revealing its secrets. While famous landscapes like Milford Sound grab your attention, the rest of New Zealand continues as it always has been. This is a country of seclusion, where the adventure can take you to places inaccessible by road. Indigenous culture remains proud and true, and you can also explore towns that have been frozen in the time of explorers. Trails can lead you to Middle Earth, ancient forests, cultivated vineyards, and Ninety Mile Beach, often without another person in sight.

Much of New Zealand remains off the beaten track because most visitors do not have the time to explore all that the country offers. This adventurous, 10-day journey sidesteps the popular and famous attractions to focus on destinations that celebrate New Zealand’s raw and natural allure. Mixing the great outdoors with culture and luxury, this route will lead you from the Northland and Hokianga and down to Christchurch and Rangitata on the South Island. Perhaps, the greatest highlight will be the people you meet. From passionate local guides to Maori opening up their marae or meeting place, venturing off the beaten track will help you enjoy the laid-back kiwi experience.

After flying into Auckland, you will board a domestic flight to Northland, where two nights in Hokianga will impress you with the endless Pacific ocean. You can explore the enormity of Ninety Mile Beach, find empty bays along the West Coast, walk through Waipoua Forest, and find the world’s largest Kauri tree. You will transfer back to Auckland on day three before continuing to Lake Aniwhenua, where you will enjoy an authentic Maori experience by spending the afternoon and night with a small community. Raetihi will be next, and getting to the old-world town will be a beautiful journey that has you crossing rolling pastures and volcanic hills.

Days five and six will be an off-the-beaten-track adventure on the Whanganui River. You will spend two days canoeing downriver with accommodations in simple wilderness camps along your route. These two days will lead you through a landscape that is inaccessible by road or on foot. It is breathtakingly secluded both on the river and at the camps. No canoeing experience is necessary, and a guide will be with you along the river. You will not even need to paddle because the current will always push you downriver through narrow canyons on a journey that escapes the world.

After leaving Whanganui, you will change tempo and spend a day around Napier and Hawkes Bay. Napier is a well-preserved 1930’s city while Hawkes Bay is full of quiet vineyards and endless views. It also has an airport, so you can fly to the South Island and spend nights eight and nine in Christchurch, where art is an excellent focal point for understanding the city’s revitalization. You can explore the real Middle Earth on your final day in New Zealand with customizable routes in Peel Forest and Rangitata. Here, like so much of your vacation, it may seem like every angle could come from the big screen, but nowhere can truly compare to where you are.

The organization was perfect! I especially liked all the excursions and the special chauffeurs who picked us up at the airports.

Australia, New Zealand Trip Review: Sydney, Cruise, Private Zoo Experience, Ayers Rock, Great Barrier Reef, 3 Weeks

All four of us who traveled to Australia and New Zealand this fall agree that Zicasso’s travel specialist did a fantastic job assisting us with planning and the actual trip itself. She listened to our itinerary, wants and desires, as well as the time constraints and budget. And while we did spend quite a bit more than what we originally intended, we had the trip of a lifetime. We are all completely satisfied with our journey, as organized by the travel specialist.

New Zealand Vacation Review: Nelson, Mount Cook, Queenstown, 20-Day Trip

From planning to execution, Zicasso’s travel specialist was fantastic. They were very responsive through the app while we were on the trip. They were extremely helpful in helping us recover our passports that we forgot in one of the hotel safes.

New Zealand Trip Review: 9 Weeks

Our trip was incredible. Zicasso’s tour operator was fantastic in planning and executing this special trip. We were in New Zealand for almost nine weeks.

Twice during our travel, we were able to get instant help to adjust our travel schedule, once because we wanted more time in one place and later to accommodate for being sick for a week.

Our trip involved 20 different hotels, inns, and guest houses, while experiencing boats, trains, and car driving to navigate both islands. The tour operator helped to arrange about 50 different events for us and then we added in many more ourselves before we left.

It has been almost a year since we traveled (Feb-Apr 2025). We have praised the tour operator (and Zicasso) to all our friends for its incredible attention to details and help anticipating all contingencies. The app for the trip was incredible in supporting the travel and collecting all the details of the arrangements comfortably in one place on our cell phones. We drove more than 2,000 miles during our trip and used Google Maps continually to navigate everywhere.

All our accommodations were comfortable. We carefully planned our packing to match the temperatures predicted for each location. We each traveled with a carry-on suitcase and a small backpack, and had everything we needed.

What helped with our planning was that we actually rehearsed the trip for several nights two months before we left and pre-planned special dinner reservations.

Australia, New Zealand Vacation Review: Adelaide, Lizard Island, Kangaroo Island, Milford Sound, 1 Month

This was our second trip organized through Zicasso and both trips were great. In retrospect, we might have changed a few things, but by an overwhelming margin, the trip was great. Interesting tours, knowledgeable guides, nice hotels.

New Zealand Trip Review: 20 Nights

It was so easy to work with Zicasso’s travel designer and the travel company. After her phone call, she worked up the trip of a lifetime. It was just perfect for us.

As we traveled, if there were any changes, we were alerted in a timely fashion. We were notified of delayed departures and possible cancellations. The only cancellation was quickly rescheduled as per our preferred time. No worries! We just have to check about two cancellations that were weather-related and how we get reimbursed for those expenses. Those cancellations were understandable and not the end of the world. We will be in contact with the travel designer to find out about those and know it will be an easy process, like everything else has been.

We will, and have, recommended this process to friends who want to visit New Zealand.
