Lisbon – The Elegance and Grandeur of the Capital
Lisbon is color and charm, energy and ebullience. It is a city that feels more like a collection of villages, where every neighborhood offers something different to the intrigued eye. You are greeted at the airport for a private transfer into the heart of the city, where your boutique hotel is located in the Baixa district. Many restaurants are within a five-minute walking distance, and you can quickly explore different neighborhoods from this central location. Relax through the afternoon, perhaps taking a stroll along the grand avenues that roam through Baixa and nearby Rossio. In the early evening, you take a tramcar tour of the city, a vintage carriage traversing a route across a city built on seven hills. It is an ideal way to get your bearings and admire the eclecticism without having to walk or join a bus tour. Early evenings are best for the tramcar ride as the streets are at their busiest and the carriages are at their quietest.

Detailed Description
Portugal’s leisurely pace is quick to make visitors feel at home. Nothing is rushed here, and there is just as much to see if you travel slowly instead of rushing. It is a country where treasures are revealed when you take your time and look closer. You can discover a Moorish gargoyle on a church tower, an island village cut off from the world, and a viewpoint overlooking pods of dolphins. The more time you spend, the more the country reveals niches, such as Manueline architecture and ceramic galleries full of blue. The laid-back rhythm is making Portugal an increasingly attractive destination for senior travelers, and this two-week tour is a celebration of the tranquil pace.
You will discover three very contrasting destinations, with centrally located hotels and private tours throughout. Lisbon is a city of grand monuments, where the postcards cannot do justice to the artistic beauty of both yesteryear and today. Porto is a charming and compact city for slow exploration, sitting patiently along the shores of the Douro River. Madeira is an island escape that feels distinct from the rest of the world, where natural heritage creates a panorama wherever you look. Combining the three provides an overview of Portugal’s varying highlights, with almost every day offering something new to discover. Majestic sea cliffs, artisanal workshops, Moorish palaces, cathedrals and towers, dolphins, and empty beaches are just a start.
Lisbon may be a capital, but it follows a relaxed tempo. Over the first days of your journey, you will explore private art galleries and world-famous icons, and escape into the forested hills of Sintra, where the palaces are more than worthy of Lord Byron’s poetic praise. Next, a high-speed, first-class train takes you to Porto where several nights help you uncover the city and its surroundings. On the itinerary are a day cruise along the Douro River, a ceramics workshop, and an excursion to the traditional cities of Braga and Guimaraes. Fly direct to Madeira for a week on the Atlantic Ocean island. Your hotel is a few steps from the coast, and three private day tours showcase contrasting aspects of the island. Experience the local village culture, the coastline, and seascapes, plus the peaks and waterfalls of the interior.

My trip to Portugal was absolutely amazing. Zicasso’s travel company went above and beyond my expectations. The itinerary was amazing and all the guides were incredible. Everything was on time, the accommodations they booked were five-star and in great locations, and enough time was built in for me to be able to explore on my own. I feel the cost was well worth the value. Should I ever go back to Portugal, I would certainly use this travel company again, and I would highly recommend them to anyone looking to have a great experience on a Portugal vacation.

Zicasso’s tour company did a fabulous job in providing us with an exceptional Portugal vacation over the Christmas and New Year’s holiday. They provided us the 24/7 coverage they promised over the holidays without a glitch, including addressing our weather-delayed arrival and multiple itinerary updates that this required without missing a step. We will be using this travel company again and recommend them without reservation.

I cannot say enough about this trip and Zicasso’s travel specialist. She helped plan a wonderful itinerary for us that we all enjoyed. Everything we wanted to see and do was accommodated. The guides we had were superb. We had a problem with the airline losing our luggage, and she was more than helpful in assisting us, as well as modifying our itinerary to accommodate our need to shop for clothing and attempt to get in touch with the airline. They were prompt in their responses.
As stated, our guides were wonderful. They were with us on multiple days and their knowledge was first-rate. They were fun as well.
I would not hesitate to use this company again and highly recommend them.

Zicasso’s travel company designed a fabulous 17-day Spain and Portugal tour for us. It was a pleasure to work with our travel specialist during the entire design process. First, the travel specialist spent time talking to us over the phone so she could get to know what each of us wanted to get out of the trip. Armed with that information, she was able to come up with a recommended agenda. We went back and forth a few times until she designed a trip that suited both of our interests. This trip turned out to be the perfect balance between learning about the history of the area, experiencing the culture, and enjoying our surroundings in rural and urban environments.
The week before we left on the tour, we reviewed our entire trip with the travel specialist over the phone. She wanted to answer any questions we may have had and to make sure we understood how to use our trip app. The trip app made it easy to see what we were doing each day. It contained descriptions of each tour and what was significant about the sites we were visiting. We had access to all our tickets through the app. There were Google Map links, so we could easily navigate to the location we needed to be. Recommendations for various restaurants and other things to do in the area were also included in the app.
The travel specialist provided her contact information and back-up contacts in case we needed anything during our trip. She made it clear to us that if our guide or driver was more than five minutes late to contact her. The travel company was there to support us 24/7.
The travel specialist pays attention to details. I highly recommend the travel company for designing a trip to Spain and Portugal.

It is hard not to be overly effusive in praise of the trip. The hotels, travel, guides, and itinerary were all wonderful. The trip was tailored to our needs and interests very well. We loved our app and Zicasso’s travel specialist checking in on us.
So what were the favorites for me? The Douro Valley, Córdoba, and Toledo. Not saying that I did not enjoy all the rest, but those were the standouts and might merit a return. I think being there during the Christmas season was special, though the crowds in Madrid were a little much for us. It was colder than we expected, but better than sweltering heat.
So what could I have lived without? The Metropol Parasol (recommended by someone else, not the travel company) was underwhelming and the Royal Palace in Madrid was not as interesting as other landmarks. The Alhambra and the Retiro Park in Madrid were more enjoyable.
That said, the travel specialist did a wonderful job accommodating our lifestyle and interests, making for a wonderful travel experience.

Zicasso’s travel specialist was a class act, very responsive and reliable, and able to adjust on the fly when we needed. She was generous and an absolute class act. We asked for a more spacious room for part of the trip and she delivered, and, I believe, paid out of pocket for the upgrade (which we didn't expect and offered to pay). We were needy at times and she handled it all with professionalism and grace. Well done. I highly recommend the travel company!
