Porto – Relaxing on the River

Land in Porto and you will be transferred to a five-star hotel perched above the river. Your accommodations command a glorious view over the valley, and of the historic center of Porto. Your room opens onto this view, as does the swimming pool and roof terrace, so it is peaceful up here, the river working its magical serenity. But you are also still very close to everything, as it’s only a little over five minutes to the heart of World Heritage Porto, and your private chauffeur provides you transport. Take some time to relax and admire the curves of both city and river, and adjust to the rhythm of a wine vacation after your day spent traveling.

Begin with your first steps in the old city as steps descend steeply to the waterfront, leading you past azulejo tiled facades. Church towers ascend above townhouses that slope steeply towards the river. There will be an air of indulgence, an air of a city that takes things slowly, and you cannot travel fast here. There are no roads by the river, as in the tightly-packed urban core, there is only cobbles, cafes, wine bars, and the sultry scent of the not-too-distant Atlantic. This evening, you will have reservations at DOP Restaurant. Set inside the 14th-century Palace of the Arts, the contemporary restaurant is the work of Michelin-starred Rui Paula. You will go on a premium tasting journey through classic Portuguese flavors, each dish paired with a fine Douro wine.

Detailed Description

This handcrafted wine tour provides an in-depth exploration of Porto and the Douro Valley. Spread across a full week, you will have time to deeply engage and appreciate why these wine regions are so special. The great Douro River is the centerpiece of this handcrafted Portuguese wine tour, the meandering work of nature that ties together experiences in Porto and remotest Douro Valley. Your tour is handcrafted with a complete range of gastronomic experiences, this also being one of Europe’s great culinary regions, along with various tutored experiences with the people who are shaping port and Douro wines.

Vineyards rise sharply from the Douro River, the terraced slopes too steep for machinery. Vines have their roots some 20 meters beneath the mountain contours, in an acidic terroir of harsh schist and granite. Growing grapes is difficult here, which is why the wines of the Douro are both revered and revolutionary. The region has been producing for over 2,000 years, and UNESCO credits the Douro as the world’s oldest demarcated wine region. In all those centuries the process has not changed, because the land is too harsh for anything but an entirely manual production of wine.

Viticulture revolution comes from the river, and it is found in port, the fortified wine that has been made in Porto since the early 17thcentury. It is also found in the rich, red blends made in three specific Douro Valley regions, the grapes being Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz (known as Tempranillo in Spain), Tinta Cau and Tinta Barroca. Wine making is an art form here, and the attention to detail makes all the difference. On this week long tour, you will explore all elements of the production, taste old vintages with winemakers and cellar-masters, and tour the highly unique vineyards. You will wander the cellars of sleepy oak barrels, inspect the grapes, pair Douro wines with food, and discover an opulent slice of the gastronomic world.

Your handcrafted tour will take several days in Porto before the rest at a wine estate deep in the Douro Valley. The river connects the two destinations, and you can travel by boat, using both sail and motor to twist deeper into the valley. Porto also provides an old-world city experience, grand architecture married with atmospheric local culture and the beautiful blue of azulejo tile facades. The Douro Valley is remote, little more than a few villages and the vineyards. Escapist and enchanting, this is a place that will provide a break from the world alongside your immersion in all the glorious red wine and cuisine.

Relax on the river when you arrive in Porto, a quick boat trip showing you the two urban sides of the Douro. Porto clusters around one side of the river, steps and slopes rising from the waterfront. To the other side is Nova de Gaia, where you will find all of the world’s famous port cellars. With three days, you can mix experiences in the city with in-depth port exploring. Visit multiple cellars, take a private vintage port masterclass, track the process from grape to production, and come to understand the legend behind the wine. Handpicked dining recommendations are provided each day, and Porto has some of the finest options in Europe, the cuisine as distinguishable as the alcohol.

Cruise down the Douro Valley half way through your trip for an ideal way to slow down your pace and admire the landscape. Check in to a boutique five-star hotel on the river, close to the historic village of Pinhao. Take several days and evenings with the wine as you tour vineyards, taste with winemakers, visit famous brands and unknown producers, and continue the journey through Douro food. Wines pair effortlessly with the cuisine, and you can indulge all the way through to a cooking demonstration and a leisurely cruise back to Porto, where your final night on tour is spent back in the city.

Portugal Travel Review: 6 Days

Oh my goodness, everything was so well done! There was not one moment of uncertainty. From the moment we landed off the plane, our very helpful, friendly driver/guide was there to assist. We had a total of three tour guides all week and each one of them was professional, friendly and fun! They were incredibly knowledgeable as they shared their true love for their country. The tours were well planned, thought out, and executed. We never felt scattered. We felt relaxed and knew we were in very capable hands.

The accommodations were perfectly located, close to everything, but not in the middle of it. We could not be more pleased with literally everything. Well done!!!

Thank you to Zicasso’s travel agent for his patience in the beginning. Us girls had a few challenges in the planning phase, but he stayed with us with grace and patience. Your professionalism is much appreciated!

Portugal Trip Review: Porto, Douro Valley, Algarve, Cooking Class, 9 Days

Zicasso’s travel company did a great job planning the trip. All of their vendors were top-notch and high-quality. We were able to do so many amazing activities and they provided us with a lot of suggestions for really cool activities we hadn't thought of.

My only feedback was that there were a couple of details they made mistakes on, including sending us to the completely wrong location for something. But overall, they did a great job and I would highly recommend working with them!

Portugal Tour Review: Lisbon, Porto, Lagos, Albufeira, Evora, Wine Tasting, Food Tour, Fado Experience, 12 Nights

Logistics: We actually cleared customs and baggage claim very quickly in Lisbon upon arrival. We were able to get to the train station and change our ticket to a train two hours earlier. We were able to notify them such that our driver was waiting for us when we came in. In general, all our drivers and vehicles were top quality (especially our driver in Porto). Our only issue here is that sometimes the pick-up times were far too early for transport to rail stations, especially the one in Albufeira. We arrived well over an hour early in what is not one of the nicest train stations in Portugal.

Hotels: All of the hotels were well located. Some were a little unique, i.e., you opened the room door in Lagos and right in front of you was the toilet area, but all the rooms were adequate, with one exception. We found it somewhat frustrating there was no seating other than the bed in all three hotels, other than the desk chair, or in the case of Lisbon, the small hassock used at the desk. Yes, Lagos had a balcony, but it was not usable due to all the rain. This was especially true in Lisbon, where according to the pictures sent in our itinerary, there was a large sofa in the room for the class we picked, but there was nothing in the room we were assigned. One other little glitch is that when we changed our schedule to drop a night in Lagos and add one in Lisbon, the hotel told us we had our original four-night reservation and then a one-night reservation for the night we came in early. The desk clerk tried to tell us we could check in, but would have to check out in the morning and wait until check-in time the next day to get our new four-night reservation room. I did clear this up with the hotel supervisor the next morning, but if they would have held their position, it would have been very awkward.

Excursions: All the activities they put together were spectacular. They’ve really spoiled us to having travel that doesn’t include 20 to 30 people. The most amazing was the dinner at the winery, as we were the only ones there. The first tour in Porto was a little rough, as it was cold and rainy, and after an overnight flight the day before, we weren’t really expecting a food tour starting at 9am, but it all worked out. Also, the fado dinner was great, although I must say, I don’t usually finish dinner at 22:30.

We are so very thankful that we selected this travel company to be our go-to partner in Portugal. It was a pleasure working with them and they were able to put together a program with what we wanted, not some cookie-cutter program that we needed to comply with. I will be giving a strong recommendation to any of our friends who are considering Portugal as a destination and we’re hoping other Zicasso operators are of the same quality when we visit other destinations.

Thanks again for everything!

Just to clarify one thing, the dinner ending at 22:30 was not a complaint; it was an observation about having a new experience, especially since it was connected to the Fado dinner.

Portugal Tour Review: Porto, Douro Valley, Wine Tasting, 1-Week Trip

Thanks to Zicasso’s tour operator, we had an amazing visit to Portugal. Here are the main reasons for the visit being so exceptional.

Accommodations: The hotels recommended were outstanding. They were located in the perfect areas in the cities we visited. They were updated, the rooms were excellent, and the amenities were plentiful.

Tour Guides: This is the biggest reason for our five-star review. The tour guides did not feel like employees of the tour operator. They felt like they were our friends. Our guides were very knowledgeable about all the places we visited. They were able to provide information that allowed us to understand the history of the places we were visiting. They truly wanted to make sure we had a great experience. They consistently made recommendations around places to eat, other sights to see, etc. Superb job by these gentlemen!!!!

Communication: From our first interaction until the end of the trip, communication from the travel specialist was excellent. The planning on what we should see and the order of the trip was perfect. She communicated with us during the trip to make sure we were aware of every detail. Great customer satisfaction.

Spain Travel Review: Seville, Historic District, 16-Day Trip

Zicasso's travel company worked with our group to curate an itinerary that was perfect for us. We never felt rushed or pressured to make a decision. Rather, they were focused on meeting all of our needs, which was difficult with a diverse group of six people.
