Lisbon – Grandeur and Charm of Baixa and Alfama Districts

Lisbon is the iconic introduction to Portugal’s character as every district is distinct and feel as if the locals are deliberately creating contrasts. Touch down in the capital and a local guide will lead your exploration, Alfama, and Baixa the classic example of a city with many characters. Rebuilt following the 1755 earthquake, Baixa is the grand heart of Lisbon and home to opulent avenues and grand plazas, a celebration of glamour and entirely different from Alfama, a distinct a dozen stops away on the tram. Narrow lanes are flanked by tiny graffiti-scathed houses to bring the old working-class neighborhood to be one that is packed with charm.

It will be here that you can hear the elegiac sounds of the Fado, a mournful style of traditional music that emanates from the taverns. While in Baixa, you can stop for a coffee on a grand al fresco terrace, but in Alfama, you will feel the heat and intensity of the tavern music with beautiful songs that drift with the smells of barbecued seafood or boiled pork. This is just your first day in Portugal, and you already have settled into the style of this luxury tour. The timing of the day will be very flexible and will allow you to move at a pace that reflects your energy levels.

Detailed Description

Portugal has always had style, and you can sense it from the moment you land. The country is colorful and full of character, tempestuous as well as tranquil, stoic while creating new ideas of the sublime. Theirs is a style that the Portuguese do not care about sharing or exporting, and a style that is anything but boastful. It is also this inimitable style that has helped to keep the country full of secrets. Dozens of destinations are unknown to the world, especially in the wild and untrammeled Alentejo region. To discover these secrets, you must travel slowly, for it is easy to miss out on the charm of Portugal when you try to rush. Slow travel means opening all your senses. It means walking slowly and uncovering the subtleties as you go off the beaten track to discover the authenticity of the country.

In a land of fables and secrets, you need to know the storytellers. You will need a guiding hand that can help to navigate you in the right direction so your 12-day luxury tour will connect you with local experts and guides with an insider knowledge of their homeland. Your guides will help you to understand the details behind the sights and the history of the land, as well as the psyche of the people and the cultural inimitability that makes everywhere in Portugal so different. With the guides alongside, you will be immersed in the country’s character and enveloped by the authenticity of destinations that most of the world has never heard of. As you depart back home, you will probably be thinking like the locals, happy to maintain the secrecy of your vacation’s destinations.

Fly into Lisbon as your tour beings and spend several days in the capital city. While there is an inevitable focus on the postcard sights, these days will be more about the back-lanes and the baffling diversity of Lisbon. You will be able to really explore the contrasts from Belem to Bairro Alto, Baixa to Alfama, as well as the hardly mentioned modern side to the city. Travel to Sintra next and spend the night so that you can experience the beautiful evening atmosphere after the day-tripping tourists have left. You will then do something similar in Cascais as you admire the sights in the day, and then the ambiance during the evening. Over this first week, there will also be local Fado music in a tiny tavern, avenues of pure glamour, and Moorish castle ruins on the top of the world.

Alentejo, your next stop, literally translates as “beyond the Tagus,” a name that reflects the feel of the landscape as you move out of Lisbon, the city on the Tagus. Uncrowded and wildly beautiful, exploring Alentejo will make you feel as if you have gone beyond. Spend a couple of days in Elvas, a surreal outpost with a frontier feel near the Spanish border and a city of charm that is dominated by a history of quarrels. Spend a couple more days in and around Estremoz to discover towns crafted almost exclusively from local marble, and towns now left in a redolent state of semi-ruin that only enhances their appeal. Finally Evora, a city with a 2,000-year history that feels as though it has been frozen in the 16th century with the cobbled streets and painted houses. Emblematic of this 12-day luxury tour, Evora will become more beautiful as you notice the nuances. From here, it is a 90-minute transfer back to Lisbon for your outbound flight as you begin your journey home.  Consider learning more about our travelers’ best Portugal travel experiences by reading their Portugal travel reviews.

Portugal Travel Review: Sintra, Nazare, Ericeira, Arrabida National Park, Lisbon, Hiking, Sailing, 1 Week

My trip to Portugal was absolutely amazing. Zicasso’s travel company went above and beyond my expectations. The itinerary was amazing and all the guides were incredible. Everything was on time, the accommodations they booked were five-star and in great locations, and enough time was built in for me to be able to explore on my own. I feel the cost was well worth the value. Should I ever go back to Portugal, I would certainly use this travel company again, and I would highly recommend them to anyone looking to have a great experience on a Portugal vacation.

Zicasso’s tour company did a fabulous job in providing us with an exceptional Portugal vacation over the Christmas and New Year’s holiday. They provided us the 24/7 coverage they promised over the holidays without a glitch, including addressing our weather-delayed arrival and multiple itinerary updates that this required without missing a step. We will be using this travel company again and recommend them without reservation.

Portugal Travel Review: Porto, Nazare, Lisbon, 1 Week

We enjoyed a relaxing trip to Portugal in December 2025. Zicasso’s travel company and their team were awesome, very present, tailored the trip based on our needs, and we got to explore much of the country, given the time of the year. The itinerary suggested was wholesome, relaxing, and covered most of the sights and sounds. I would highly recommend them to friends and family.

Portugal Tour Review: Lisbon, Porto, Private Guide, 8 Nights

I cannot say enough about this trip and Zicasso’s travel specialist. She helped plan a wonderful itinerary for us that we all enjoyed. Everything we wanted to see and do was accommodated. The guides we had were superb. We had a problem with the airline losing our luggage, and she was more than helpful in assisting us, as well as modifying our itinerary to accommodate our need to shop for clothing and attempt to get in touch with the airline. They were prompt in their responses.

As stated, our guides were wonderful. They were with us on multiple days and their knowledge was first-rate. They were fun as well.

I would not hesitate to use this company again and highly recommend them.

Portugal Vacation Review: Lisbon, Porto, Palaces, Vineyards, Wine Tasting, 10 Nights

My husband and I were lucky enough to have found Zicasso’s travel specialist and the tour company. She, along with our amazing guides, gave us the most amazing experience in Portugal that I know we would not have had without their guidance. I wanted to make sure we had the typical tourist attractions and some that were not typical.

Our travel specialist planned a perfect trip from Lisbon to Porto for us. She was always a text or call away for any questions and was the most amazing host. Our guides were wonderful and they were very knowledgeable about the country and the places they took us to. It was so nice going into little cafés and special places that they wanted us to see, which we would never have gone to on our own.

We have traveled all over the world and this travel team is top-notch!!

Spain, Portugal Travel Review: Douro Valley, Ronda, Sagrada Familia, Picasso Museum, Flamenco Show, Bullring, Bull Farm, Vineyard, River Cruise, 17-Night Trip

Zicasso’s travel company designed a fabulous 17-day Spain and Portugal tour for us. It was a pleasure to work with our travel specialist during the entire design process. First, the travel specialist spent time talking to us over the phone so she could get to know what each of us wanted to get out of the trip. Armed with that information, she was able to come up with a recommended agenda. We went back and forth a few times until she designed a trip that suited both of our interests. This trip turned out to be the perfect balance between learning about the history of the area, experiencing the culture, and enjoying our surroundings in rural and urban environments.

The week before we left on the tour, we reviewed our entire trip with the travel specialist over the phone. She wanted to answer any questions we may have had and to make sure we understood how to use our trip app. The trip app made it easy to see what we were doing each day. It contained descriptions of each tour and what was significant about the sites we were visiting. We had access to all our tickets through the app. There were Google Map links, so we could easily navigate to the location we needed to be. Recommendations for various restaurants and other things to do in the area were also included in the app.

The travel specialist provided her contact information and back-up contacts in case we needed anything during our trip. She made it clear to us that if our guide or driver was more than five minutes late to contact her. The travel company was there to support us 24/7.

The travel specialist pays attention to details. I highly recommend the travel company for designing a trip to Spain and Portugal.
