Detailed Description

Not much has survived from Europe’s medieval centuries. Battles were waged, innovation stalled, art was at a standstill across most of the continent. After the Greeks and the Romans came a period of seeming nothingness, before the explosion of the Renaissance and the Gothic. This interpretation of medieval Europe is one-sided, overlooking one of the greatest civilizations ever to grace the planet, the Moors. Once powerful, now mostly forgotten from world history, the Moorish realm stretched across the Iberian Peninsula (modern day Spain and Portugal). Cordoba is its beating heart, the world’s most cultural city in the 10th and 11th centuries. When their lands were taken over, their legacy continued, the Moriscos and Mudejars dictating artistic ingenuity up to the 16th century. In the 21st century, spectacular examples of Moorish culture continue to cover the southern Spanish state of Andalusia, and the experience is immersive, cities and villages hardly changed since the medieval era.

This privately guided 13-day tour celebrates the beauty and bequest of the Moors, exploring the less than subtle contrasts between the centuries, as well as the brilliant diversity of the designs. Starting with the time of the caliphate in Cordoba, the Mezquita is a mesmerizing introduction to the art, and you take a journey across the Moorish memoirs in Andalusia. Spend two days in the Pueblos Blancos (White Villages), Arcos de la Frontera and Ronda an immersion in the whitewashed style of Moors evading looters and pirates. Take in the cathedral castles of Malaga and Almeria and how the grand design is built upon what the Romans left behind.

In Seville, you spend two days exploring the legacy of the Mudejars, Islamic people of Moorish descent who stayed in Andalusia following the fall of Cordoba and the caliphate. Later, on this exclusive Spanish tour, two days in Ubeda and Baeza present the brilliance of the Moriscos, Moorish descendants who converted to Christianity, fusing influence from Renaissance Italy in their sought-after artisanal designs. Granada was the final Moorish stronghold, surviving until the year Columbus reached the New World, and two days in this labyrinthine city are an insight into the old world of the Nasrid Kingdom. Guided by a Moorish expert and afforded the time to ensure a leisurely pace, this is an illuminating journey through one of the world’s greatest cultures, and a history that deserves far more international recognition.

Spain, Morocco Trip Review: Madrid, Seville, Granada, Gibraltar, Malaga, Cordoba, Casablanca, Oualidia, Marrakech, Tapas Tour, 17 Days

The custom trip and itinerary were developed by Zicasso’s travel company and they made numerous recommendations for exploring, starting in Spain, in Madrid, and continuing down to numerous Andalusian cities, including Seville, Granada, Gibraltar, Málaga, and Córdoba.

Not only was the itinerary prepared with great detail and consideration, but every effort was taken to ensure the lodging requested met five-star requirements. Drivers and guides were assigned to us at all of our destinations, and this included airport arrivals and departures. Drivers and guides were not only punctual, they were personable and extremely knowledgeable, with decades of experience.

Our trip continued to Morocco, where we flew into Casablanca from Málaga. Again, airport connections were perfect and we had VIP arrival service on landing. Our driver and guide were aligned with us for the week we spent between Oualidia and Marrakech. Lodging was exceptional and our expectations were certainly exceeded.

Furthermore, the travel company made it a point to communicate with us openly over WhatsApp, answering the few questions we had in a prompt manner and checking in with us throughout the trip.

This is the first time I have 100% used a travel company and I could not have been more pleased with the delivery of the trip and the overall cost.

Portugal, Spain Tour Review: Lisbon, Seville, Cordoba, Granada, Ronda, Barcelona, Bullfighting Ring Visit, 2 Weeks

Zicasso's travel specialist and his team were awesome! All we knew was that we wanted to go to Lisbon and Barcelona, and see some local culture in Spain. He designed a trip from Lisbon to Sevilla to Córdoba (day trip) to Grenada (with a stop in Ronda) to Barcelona. The guides and tours were all excellent, and his hotel and travel choices were spot-on. Our guide in Grenada (our travel specialist himself!) was awesome. I can't recommend more highly.

Spain, Morocco Vacation Review: Madrid, Seville, Granada, Barcelona, Tangier, Alhambra, 2 Weeks

From our first phone call with Zicasso's travel specialist, it was clear that we were on the same wavelength with respect to what we sought from this trip, and she made it even better with her suggestions. She was always very quick to respond to our questions and input, and overall we were really thrilled with the itinerary she put together. The result was that Spain turned out to be even better than we had expected!

The schedule was excellent, including using Madrid and Seville as the bases for day trips. Our visit to Tangier, Morocco, was particularly terrific. We had never before entertained such a visit because of health and security concerns, but when we expressed some curiosity, she wholeheartedly encouraged us. Most importantly, she provided a personal guide who was wonderful. Our guide ensured we could experience a bit of the culture, avoid any problems, enjoy a delicious meal, and get our first camel rides!

Throughout our journey, she secured admission tickets to palaces, fortresses, museums, etc., in advance, and we never had to wait in lines. During our travels, she also provided four tour guides. All were excellent: professional, friendly, and knowledgeable. We very much enjoyed every one of them. That goes as well for the private driver she arranged. Our driver not only conveyed us to and from the ferry terminal for our trip to Tangier, but also from Seville to Ronda and on to Granada.

She also introduced us to a travel app. It was extremely easy to use, allowed us to have our itinerary and tickets with us at all times, and enabled us to communicate with her and her staff instantly, which we did whenever a question cropped up. A great resource that we hope to have on future journeys.

Finally, the hotels she chose. Overall, their locations, staff, service, and breakfasts were first-rate. As an example, we never had any trouble getting ice every night for sore knees following our day’s explorations. On the other hand, we feel we should note that one hotel in Granada had a subpar breakfast and that the front-desk staff at one hotel in Seville did not stand out. Lastly, although she had nothing to do with it, she and her clients should know that the taxi service in Seville was tenuous as a general matter when it came to our time-sensitive transportation needs. We did not miss any entry time or event, but the hotel confirmed that the norm in that city is to call for a ride with no certainty of getting picked up on a timely basis.

But we cannot end with that. Our experiences in Spain were exceptional and very meaningful thanks to her. Whenever the subject comes up with our friends, we will be sure to recommend her and Zicasso for a wonderful trip.

Spain Travel Review: Madrid, Seville, Malaga, Alhambra, Flamenco Show, 10-Day Trip

Our group of five ladies recently returned from a wonderful 10-day trip to Spain, visiting Madrid, Seville, and Málaga. From the very beginning, working with Zicasso’s travel specialists made the entire experience seamless and enjoyable.

During the planning stages, our travel specialist was outstanding. We had several phone calls and exchanged numerous emails, and he always listened carefully to my suggestions, while offering thoughtful recommendations of his own. Together, we created a customized itinerary that perfectly suited our group. Highlights included the flamenco show, guided tours of Madrid, Triana, Málaga, the Alhambra, and the Real Alcazar in Seville.

All of our tour guides were local, knowledgeable, and passionate about sharing the history, culture, and culinary traditions of their cities. We particularly enjoyed our time in Triana with a local guide and our tour in Madrid with another local guide. Their insights and enthusiasm made our experiences even more memorable.

The logistics throughout the trip were excellent. Every transfer between airports, hotels, and train stations was punctual and professionally handled. Our drivers were always on time, courteous, and reliable.

The hotels selected for us were beautiful, comfortable, and conveniently located. The standout was our hotel in Málaga, which was absolutely stunning. We also appreciated the excellent breakfast options at each property. An added convenience was that every hotel allowed us to check in early, something our group greatly appreciated after traveling.

Throughout the trip, our travel specialists remained in close communication with us and were always responsive to any questions or requests. Our specialist consistently provided advance information regarding our guides and meeting locations, which made everything easy and stress-free. When our train from Málaga to Madrid was rescheduled to an earlier departure time, she promptly notified us, sent updated tickets, and arranged an earlier hotel pick-up, ensuring that everything went smoothly.

The level of stress that often accompanies international travel was significantly reduced thanks to the professionalism, organization, and attention to detail provided by the travel specialists. It was truly a pleasure working with them and their dedication ensured that every aspect of our trip ran smoothly.

We would not hesitate to recommend their services to anyone planning a trip to Spain. They helped create a memorable experience that our group will cherish for years to come.

Zicasso’s travel specialist did an excellent job of coordinating all the somewhat complicated logistics for our trip to Andalusia. Hotel accommodations were very good and well-located. The multiple guides we had in Granada, Cordoba, and Seville were all knowledgeable and very personable.

During the trip-planning phase, the travel specialist was in frequent contact with us to ensure the trip was tailored to our specific interests and pacing preferences. During the trip, our other travel specialist was in daily contact with us to check on our status and needs.
