Mendoza – Arrive in Mendoza, Argentina’s Charming Winegrowing City

Mendoza has become a panorama of Argentina’s wine country displaying the dynamic flavors and distinct characteristics of an entire region along the shady streets and charming café-culture the city proudly cultivates. Your flight lands at Governor Francisco Gabrielli International Airport, where your private transfer greets you upon arrival. The sunlight betrays the region’s dry climate juxtaposed by the crisscrossing network of irrigation channels bordering the wide streets. Fountains trickle at the heart of the public plazas and students relax on the lush grasses of the Parque General San Martin at the edges of the glistening lake.

After settling into the comforts of your luxurious hotel at the heart of the city, the remaining day is yours to explore the relaxed pace and quiet charms of a city only 600 miles away from Buenos Aires but encompassing an entirely different world. The best introduction to Mendoza’s obsession with flavorful treats revolves around a tasting at an artisanal chocolate factory. Your guide walks you through the facilities amidst the aroma of confectionary sugar and caramel. The family-owned business gives you access to their secret recipes as they produce some of the city’s favorite desserts, from buttery alfajores cookies to the rich flavors of hand-rolled dark chocolate truffles. Biting into the treat immerses you in the iconic flavors of a city in which taste and accentuating flavor matter.

Detailed Description

Argentina is one of the largest producers and exporters of wine in the world and your 8-day wine tour immerses you in the luxuries of culture that has emerged from a focus on quality varietals. The European vines and wine heritage brought by immigrants in the 19th and 20th centuries have turned into a culture specific to the vineyards of Mendoza and the arid northwest. The fundamental part of the culinary traditions in the city reflects luxurious style for formal and informal gatherings valuing the superiority in structure, complexity, concentration, and potential.

Your expansive wine tour begins with your arrival in Mendoza and the Primera Zona of the winegrowing region resulting in the most cultivated vines. Mendoza embodies the relaxed attitudes and an enthusiastic connection to wine production. The serene streets are filled with cafes and chocolate shops, restaurants and ice cream shops. The bodegas around glow with lush vines and vibrant flavors specific to the micro-regions in which the grapes are grown. The city erupts with tasty treats connected the wines, including confectionaries and bakeries. Family-run wineries highlight the different characteristics of similar grapes like Malbec grown on different sections of the terroir dominated by the rugged foothills of the Andes to the west.

The stylish, sustainable vineyards harmonize viniculture and nature offering samples of the most desirable flavors emphasized by oak barrels, steel vats, and the properties of the soil. The town of Cafayate is nestled into the Andes with vines spreading along the foothills growing iconic grapes like Torrontés and Malbec. Colomé unravels the marvels of the secluded wineries in the northwest. The estancia embodies a blend of history and modernity with an antique homestead and a contemporary art museum dedicated to light. The winery maintains the world’s highest vineyard and offers horseback riding excursions around the tens-of-thousands of acres allowing you sample exceptional cuisine, activities, and wines. Argentina, Chile Vacation Review: Buenos Aires, Iguazu Falls, Lake District, Calafate, Tierra del Fuego, Torres del Paine National Park, Cruise, Glacier Visit, 3 Weeks

We enjoyed the trip very much. We had planned to visit every place of interest to us in Patagonia on this trip, so it was quite a complex trip to arrange. Zicasso’s travel specialist did a great job overall. We had private guides and private cars for everything, so we could enjoy the experiences at our own pace and focus on the things that interested us.

We started in Buenos Aires, but our main focus was natural beauty. We spent a very interesting day and a half in the city, though. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the local history and the sites we visited. Next we went to Iguazú Falls, which was a spectacular experience. Our guide there was the only one who didn't seem as deep or as organized as all the others, but that was a minor issue. Although it is wickedly expensive, I would highly recommend that travelers stay in the one and only lodge inside the Iguazú Falls national park. We got a lot more out of our time there because we were right there at the park.

Next we went to the Lake District and spent memorable days on the water there; amazing scenery! We also saw condors during one of our day-long boat rides on the lake.

Next, we went to Calafate. Although we are not trekkers, the visits to the two main glaciers were unforgettable. The travel specialist had us in the VIP cabin for the day-long boat trip and we had a very knowledgeable guide for the visit to the Perito Moreno glacier.

We did the four-day cruise through Tierra del Fuego next, which I highly recommend, ending in Chile, where we spent two days at the Torres del Paine National Park, one by road in the park with a very knowledgeable private guide, and the second on a full-day lake tour with a marvelous lunch at a scenic ranch, with a close-up view to a glacier.

Chile Vacation Review: Patagonia, Torres del Paine, Hiking, 10 Days

We went mostly into Patagonia and Torres del Paine, an amazing location. Zicasso’s travel specialist delivered as promised! Everything was first-class and his recommendations for everything from tours to restaurants were right on.

A special note to those with food allergies:

I have a lot of food allergies, so it is not easy for me to eat out, let alone out of the country. I let the travel specialist know ahead of time and all my tours, hotels, and guides knew I was coming and really helped to accommodate me. THANKS AGAIN!

Zicasso’s travel specialist did an excellent job planning our vacation. Every detail was taken care of, down to airport transfers with English-speaking drivers.

The excursions we were on were in quality locations, with meaning and historical significance. We had a little bit of downtime to explore Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro.

Overall, we are really happy visiting Argentina and Brazil, and satisfied that he planned our vacation.

Chile, Argentina Tour Review: Buenos Aires, Ushuaia, Santiago, Torres del Paine, Hiking, Tango Show, Glacier Experience, Penguins, Michelin-Star Dining, 3-Week Trip

We loved working with Zicasso’s travel specialist during the planning phase of this three-week trip to Argentina and Chile. She took the time to listen carefully to our trip goals, our “must-dos,” and our “don’t likes.” She helped us design our dream journey, put all the pieces together by working with her contacts in-country, was available for questions, provided her advice and guidance along the way, and made modifications as needed.

She was a pleasure to work with and we could tell that her main goal was to ensure we would have the trip we wanted and that everything would go as planned. She was also available during our trip in case anything went astray and ensured we had local contacts in case they were needed. We had the trip of a lifetime, and she made it happen for us. We are very grateful for her help and will definitely use her again for future trips.
