Shannon – A Relaxed Welcome in Limerick

With its enchanting voices and welcoming atmosphere, Shannon is a lovely introduction to this side of the world. This relaxed town is cast along a river, with colorful houses beneath a bulbous cathedral spire. Not that much happens in Shannon, but there is a real beauty to taking a stroll and exploring local streets as many of the houses are painted a single color that contrasts their neighbors. You can visit one of the small pubs, which are classic places for dancing and storytelling like they always have been. In Shannon, you really feel like you are in Ireland, and the locals will be quick to welcome you into the country. Nothing definitive is planned for today though, just an airport transfer and time to meet with your guide.

Detailed Description

Ireland, England and Scotland are three very different countries. You can witness this in the photos and through the traditions that you will experience. Irish dancing and the Cliffs of Moher is a million miles from Central London, yet you must travel to both to experience the magnitude of their differences. The cultures are distinct, along with their versions of history. Landscapes change enormously, as do the local attractions. Think of Scottish whisky, Irish storytelling and English breakfasts, or even comparing castles in the three countries. These three nations love to showcase their inimitability, especially in comparison to their neighbors, and also when entertaining international visitors.

Such contrasts make this private handcrafted tour feel like three vacations in one. Throughout the 17 days you will explore a full range of highlights, while still traveling at a relaxed and easy-going pace. Rather than hopping quickly between destinations, you will spend two nights in most of them (one in York and three in London). There is plenty of time to really settle in and absorb the local atmosphere. Day trips will show you more of the country and you always return to a comfortable base. In addition, two local flights are used to minimize driving time and maximize your experience on the ground. Traveling through England is best on high-speed trains, and your route is tailored to the best transport connections.

You will start with six days in Ireland where you will land in the quiet outpost of Shannon and listen to some Irish singing and storytelling. You may also check out the famous Cliffs of Moher and the Burren on day two before an even more traditional evening entertainment. Adare and Killarney fill day three, and then day four explores the Ring of Kerry, where villages meet lakeside landscapes and working farms. You will then fly to Dublin and have two nights in the capital city. That is plenty of time for a day of city sightseeing, plus a day trip to County Wicklow, the serene Garden of Ireland.

Next, you will fly straight into Inverness and your Scottish experience will begin with Highlands and castles. There are whisky distilleries and other local icons around this area as well. You will explore the Scottish Highlands, visit old battlefields, take a day trip to the Isle of Skye, and see the lake where Nessie the monster is rumored to hide. Journey South by road to Edinburgh, which is a lovely old capital that is always well received by senior travelers. Two nights means that you can get around all the key sights, especially since your hotel is located on the Royal Mile.

From here onwards, you will travel by train. First, you will zoom to York and see how the atmosphere changes South of the border. Then, you will discover the well-preserved medieval city as you walk through its markets and tiny alleyways. You will only need one day in York and it will not be rushed. Next, you will travel to Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of Shakespeare and a rural town you will not want to leave. After seeing the sights, you will have plenty of time to relax amid rural settings, as well as an opportunity to watch the outdoor theater. You will end your private tour with three nights in London. One day will be guided and incorporates the key, major attractions. The other two days are left free, as London is a city that has so many attractions that you can easily find your own angle and allure.

Scotland Travel Review: Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness, Loch Ness, Highlands, 9 Days

We recently returned from our tour of Scotland that we booked through Zicasso’s travel company, and I can honestly say it exceeded my expectations in nearly every way. Our travel agent created a wonderful itinerary, with some fantastic tours. Even though we had some mix-ups along the way, the travel agent and our driver quickly changed plans and got us to other great sites. In the end, everything worked out and the travel company made it right.

From the moment we arrived, everything felt thoughtfully organized, without ever being rigid or rushed. Our personal driver struck the perfect balance between being informative and personable, sharing rich historical context, local legends, and even a bit of humor that made long drives feel short. He made the trip so much fun and kept us laughing the entire trip. It never felt like a scripted experience; instead, it felt like traveling with someone who genuinely loves Scotland and wants you to love it too.

The itinerary was particularly well designed. We covered iconic highlights, from Edinburgh, through Glasgow, staying in Inverness, then ending the trip in Edinburgh in one of the most romantic and elegant places we have stayed.

Through our travels, we saw dramatic Highlands, serene lochs, and charming villages, while still having enough free time to explore on our own. I appreciated that the schedule didn’t feel overly packed; there was space to soak in the scenery, enjoy a quiet walk, or linger a bit longer in places that captured our attention.

The accommodations were another standout. Each place had its own character, ranging from cozy inns to elegant hotels, all clean and comfortable. It felt like an authentic experience rather than a generic one.

Transportation was smooth and reliable. Having our own personal driver made a big difference. It allowed for a more intimate, flexible experience and made it one of the best vacation experiences we have had.

If I had to offer one small suggestion, it would be to include slightly more time in some of the smaller towns—we often wished we could stay just a bit longer. That said, I understand the challenge of balancing such a rich itinerary.

Overall, this was a memorable and enriching trip, and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this travel company to anyone looking to explore Scotland in a meaningful and well-organized way. I came home with not just photos, but a genuine appreciation for the country’s history, landscapes, and culture.

United Kingdom, Ireland Travel Review: Edinburgh, Dublin

Zicasso’s travel specialist and his team were superb. They were able to craft the perfect trip for us. The hotels, destinations, and tours were all very well planned and arranged, and they went out of their way to arrange everything just as we requested.

I would recommend the travel company to everyone who wants polite, efficient service. The team was available and responded a couple of times quickly during the trip when we had questions. Overall, they made our trip one to remember for years to come. We were all very happy.

Scotland, Ireland Tour Review: Edinburgh, Stirling, Dublin, Galway, Castles, 9 Days

Zicasso’s travel specialists were excellent to work with, as we adjusted our itinerary many times from initial contact to the time of travel. Our travel party significantly reduced in number and they worked with us to put together a great tour of Scotland (Edinburgh, including the castle, Royal Holyrood Palace, and a day trip to Stirling Castle with a great chauffeur/guide) and Ireland, arranging our flight to Dublin with transportation to Galway, then return via train for activities in Dublin. We had a wonderful trip and would highly recommend the travel company.

Scotland Tour Review: Edinburgh, Isle of Skye, 9 Days

The trip was awesome, but the standout portion of the trip was our time with our chauffeur. He both knowledgeable and engaged the entire time, and just a pleasure to be around. Our accommodations were nice and our scheduled excursions in Edinburgh were great.

If I could offer one suggestion, and, in truth, it's difficult to even come up with one, we would have appreciated assistance with dinner reservations while we were in Edinburgh. Other Zicasso trips we've taken have included this service and we have found it very helpful.

I am looking forward to our next trip with this travel company! We've already made a list of what we'd like to see next time. Thank you so much for providing such an amazing experience. Looking forward to my next (my fifth) Zicasso trip!

England, Scotland Vacation Review: London, York, Edinburgh, Stonehenge, 10 Nights

We recently traveled to the UK using Zicasso’s travel specialist and we had the most amazing trip. Everything was planned out perfectly. From the pick-up at the airport to drop-off, we met friendly and interesting drivers who couldn’t wait to share their knowledge of London, York, and Edinburgh.

The guides we had for various excursions were fantastic. They went above and beyond to accommodate us. My husband is an amateur photographer and they were great with suggestions and very patient while he took his photos.

We had a small issue with a hotel room and it was resolved within hours by the travel specialist and her team, which made our stay a dream. She was also able to get us inside tickets to Stonehenge and, wow, it was magical.

Honestly, we were overwhelmed at first trying to plan this on our own, but working with the travel specialist was the best thing we did. We have wonderful memories of England and Scotland, and we are very grateful.
